The Halo That Brought Me Back

October 7, 2023. Dotan Amir arrives at the Nova music festival to dance until morning. Hours later, he is shot, abducted into Gaza, and disappears into the chaos of the massacre. When he wakes in a hospital in Deir al-Balah, he meets Hala—a Palestinian nurse who quickly realizes that if the people holding him discover he is still alive, his fate will no longer be in her hands. One decision she makes changes both their lives. Inside a small house in Gaza, as the war moves closer to the windows and the world outside slowly closes in, Dotan learns to become someone else. He learns Arabic. He learns to remain silent. He learns to live with fear. Most of all, he learns to trust the only woman who can save him—and the only one who can also turn him in. But as the days pass, the boundaries between captor and savior, prisoner and guest, fear and intimacy begin to disappear. And when Dotan realizes that his only way home leads through the woman who may no longer want him to leave, he is forced to choose between the person who kept him alive and the life he is trying to return to.
